We’ve all been told that we are what we eat, and we know that the food we eat has an impact on the way we feel. But when we are going about our day to day lives, we sometimes lose sight of how closely related these things are. Your diet and your body have an extremely important relationship. There are many physical cues that can help you to know whether or not you are eating properly. You just need to learn how to spot these cues and to pay attention to them.

Your Energy Level

Often, people feel tired and have no idea why. If you are getting enough sleep each night, and are not engaging in any kind of strenuous physical activity that it out of the ordinary for you, your energy level should be relatively stable. If you are noticing fluctuations that seem unrelated to your seep patterns, your eating habits may be the problem.

There are lots of different dietary problems that could cause fatigue and lack of energy. A good place to start is to figure out how many calories you generally consume in a day. Too few calories means that your body is not getting enough energy. A surplus of calories that go unburned can also contribute to fatigue. Write down everything you eat for a few days, and determine whether you are eating too much, too little, or the right amount.

If you are eating within your recommended calorie range and are still feeling depleted of energy, you are probably eating the wrong things. Lack of protein can make you feel lethargic. So can a lack of iron. Lethargy is a symptom of many vitamin deficiencies as well. In addition, excess sugar, fat and caffeine can all make your energy level drop. Dehydration can contribute as well. Make sure you are drinking the recommended 8 glasses of water a day.

The Nails, Hair and Skin

The condition of skin, nails and hair are all good indicators of whether or not you are eating right. Hair that is dry and breaks easily can be a sign of a nutritional deficiency, as can dry or pasty skin and brittle nails. These things stay healthy if you get enough protein and enough of certain vitamins.

Digestive Functions

Our bowel movements may not be pretty to think about, but they are a good indicator of whether we need to make changes in the way we eat. Constipation is usually a sign of trouble, as is diarrhea. Any time your bathroom habits suddenly undergo a drastic change, you should think over what you have been eating. When you are eating a diet that is healthy and right for your body, your digestion should be somewhat predictable.

When you start learning your own physical cues, it gets easier and more instinctive to hear the things they are saying. Once you begin listening, you become more and more aware of how your diet and your body are connected to one another. You can learn to avoid foods that make you feel bad, and to favor the ones that make you feel great!
